Frederick Douglass Speaks

On the twenty-fifth anniversary of Emancipation in 1889, the Hon. Frederick Douglass gave a speech in Philadelphia, just a few months before he visited St. Augustine, and spoke at Genovar’s Opera House.

He stated it was untrue and misleading to place the burden of change upon Blacks alone.

This was an issue for the entire nation to resolve.

He continued that the South must comply with the Constitution of the United States:

“South Carolina is great but the United States is greater.”
